President Rodrigo Duterte has again extended the term of Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa for a few more months. The president made the announcement on Tuesday, February 20 in an event in Malacañang. As a response, the PNP chief said that he is happy to continue his service but also sad at the same time.
“The PNP [chief] now, who are supposed to retire on the 24th of April, and because he enjoys my trust and confidence, I will extend his term for a little bit longer, for enough reforms to get hold,” President Duterte said in a speech during the induction of the new board of directors of the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce Phils. Inc.
“I still have to institute continuing reforms with the police. And the police has always been a problem. But they are not that many. There are scoundrels, scalawags in every organization.” The Commander in chief added, who has first extended PNP Chief Bato’s term last December. The latter was supposed to retire last January 21.
On Wednesday, February 21, PNP Chief Bato Dela Rosa said that President Duterte has not yet personally told him about his second extension and that he only learned about it news reports and social media. However, he said he is glad to accept the president’s order but is somehow sad that his plans for retirement were put to hold.”Mixed feeling, una masaya na medyo malungkot konti, masaya in the sense na nandiyan pa rin yung trust and confidence ni President sa atin na patuloy tayong magtatrabaho and masaya rin ako dahil patuloy yung aking pagseserbisyo sa ating bansa, tuloy tuloy pa rin,” Dela Rosa told reporters.
(Mixed feeling. First, I’m happy and slightly sad. Happy because the president still has trust and confidence to me, to continue, and I’m also happy because I can continue serving the country.)
“On the other hand, medyo malungkot konti dahil nasira yung mga plano sa retirement dahil meron na akong mga plano para sa aking pamilya, kung anong gagawin namin but then again maintindihan naman ng mga anak ko ‘yan, asawa ko ‘yan,” he added.
(On the other hand, I’m a bit sad because my plans for retirement was ruined, because I have plans for my family, But then again, my wife and children understand it.)
In addition, PNP Chief Bato dela Rosa said that he cannot say “No” to President Duterte because he was indebted to him and that he has high respect for the president. “As I have said, I am willing to serve under him until my last breath. Hindi ako aayaw, hangga’t kinakailangan niya ako, andito lang ako na magtatrabaho,” he added.
