Iglesia Ni Cristo not to engage in political affairs seems a thing of the past now after President Rodrigo Duterte tapped INC Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo to head one of the top positions in the Department of Foreign Affairs.
In his appointment papers dated February 13 and released Wednesday, Manalo was assigned as the Special Envoy of the President for Overseas Filipinos’ Concerns.
His term began on January 30, 2018, and will end on January 29, 2019.
The influential religious sect endorsed Duterte on 2016 Presidential Elections.
INC has been clouded with controversies and scandals earlier when several former ministers accused the council of corruption. The scandal resulted to a massive unpopularity of the religious group, who survives on using government connections and influential people.
The appointment of Manalo is seen by several vocal members as the end of the group’s tradition not to meddle in politics except for bloc voting.
