‘Solid Kapuso’ Grab Driver Got Suspended for Rejecting ABS-CBN News Reporter

A Grab driver was suspended after he rejected ABS-CBN News reporter Jacque Manabat to be his passenger. It turned out that he rejected her simply because he is a solid fan of the GMA-7, or the Kapuso network. Manabat herself shared the details of the incident on her Facebook page last Wednesday, May 30 and earned mixed reactions.

“Sa dami naman na maayos na Grab drivers, sa “solid kapuso” pa makakapag-book. Koya, kebs kung saan ka solid. Gusto ko lang makauwi.” Manabat wrote as caption to the screenshot of her conversation with the solid Kapuso Grab driver. According to her, she told the driver that she is inside the ABC-CBN compound at Esguerra Ave. Quezon City.

“Sorry, I can’t make it. Solid Kapuso po kasi ako.” The Grab driver replied. In short, her booking was canceled. Ironically, Manabat that day has just covered the meeting between the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and Grab about its P80-minimum fare. In her reply to comments, she said she already reported the incident to Grab.

In her Facebook update on Friday, Manabat said that the Solid Kapuso Grab driver is under 5 day suspension and underwent retraining and coaching on Thursday. Nevertheless, the Kapamilya reporter did not reveal the name of the driver. On the other hand, Grab Philippines did not release any statement related to this matter.

According to the law, taxi drivers are not allowed to choose passengers who they will stop for. For Grab (and Uber), passengers can book a driver via an app so basically, they also cannot choose passengers. Early this month, Grab announced its plan to impose fine to passengers who cancel the bookings, just like Uber is implementing.

Currently, Grab drivers are allowed to cancel 5 percent of their trips. However, those who cancel more than 10 percent may face sanctions such as suspension or blacklisting from the platform. But a driver canceling a booking because he is a fan of the rival network of a news reporter, well I think this is absurd.
