The Avengers have invaded the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections campaign period, which started Friday, May 4. And yes, the more than 1 million candidates all over the country will do everything to attract attention, from happy-tune jingles to colorful posters, so that voters will remember their names during election.
And because social media is very useful platform for promotion, barangay and SK candidates need to have tons of friends and followers to help them. But if you are creative enough, all you need is a single tarpaulin with a controversial theme, just like in the photo below, where candidates used the famous Avenger movie in their campaign.
As you can see, there are eight candidates running for barangay captain and councilors (Kagawad) at Barangay 16-B. After doing some research via Google, we learned that these candidates are from Barangay 16-B, Poblacion, Davao City, based on its official website. Two of them are re-electionists, while five of them are newcomers in politics.
Starting from the upper left is Benedicto O. Ramento, Jr., a former kagawad now running for barangay captain; a certain Chang, re-electionists Tomas S. Abatayo and Reynaldo J. Aba-a. We cannot identify the name on the lower left, but he is followed by Araneta. Gacita and Lu. However, it is very unlikely that they have asked permission from Marvel.
As expected, this Avenger-themed election campaign poster earned mixed reactions from netizens. Some of them praised their creativity, while some called them as Epal, or someone who will do everything just to get noticed. It may not be against the rules of the Comelec (Commission on Elections), but still it does mean they will automatically win the elections.
Meanwhile, President Rodrigo Duterte signed Proclamation 479 last Wednesday, declaring Monday, May 14, as a special non-working day to give the public enough time to vote in the barangay and SK elections. Earlier, the Comelec released its guidelines as where candidates are not allowed to post their campaign posters and materials.
