Democracy is Dead: Robredo Vows to Resign if Death Penalty is Reinstated

Vice President Leni Robredo delivered a strong statement on Wednesday after the Congress approved the death penalty bill on second reading.

In a press conference at her hometown in Naga City, Robredo said that if the death penalty is reinstated, democracy in the Philippines is dead.

Robredo said with heavy hearts that she can do nothing but to resign from her post as Vice President if the capital punishment is reinstated.

Robredo also feared that her fellow politicians who have pending plunder cases related to pork barrel scam will face maximum penalty if the death penalty bill is implemented.

After pro-death penalty congressmen won in the voice vote, anti-death solons tried, but failed, to move for nominal voting — because session was immediately adjourned after the bill was approved.

Bill sponsor and Justice Committee chair Rey Umali said even if anti-death penalty lawmakers were able to move for nominal voting, they would not be able to muster enough support for the motion to prosper.

Umali added the passage of the bill was not railroaded.

He said critics of the death penalty were allowed to propose amendments. However, Umali said, these were just repetitions of previous arguments during the period of debates.

The Justice chair noted that opposing congressmen were only engaging in delaying tactics, which was why the House leadership opted to close the period of amendments and put the bill to a vote.

Negros Representative Saturnino Cruz said that most congressmen who voted against the bill are communist or left-wing supporters who do not value human life.

Cruz said that the arrogance of left-wing congressmen, especially the party list representatives are at work again noting that the New People’s Army have killed so many people since its establishment several decades ago. /Maila Domingo/
