DAR Vows to Pursue Distribution of Hacienda Luisita to Farmers

The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) said it will fight to pursue the distribution of big part of controversial Hacienda Luisita to farmers, DAR legal counsel Atty. Menandro Garcia told reporters on Friday.

Hacienda Luisita, the controversial property partly owned by the family of former President Benigno Aquino III, had been the subject of deadly conflicts that resulted to the loss of many lives, particularly the claiming farmers (beneficiaries).

Since the creation of the Department of Agrarian Reform more than two decades ago, Hacienda Luisita have not been touched, while most sugar farms in Negros Island had gone through VOS (Voluntary Offer to Sell) by the owners, and distributed to resident farmers (employee beneficiaries).

Garcia said there is enough basis according to the law to distribute the huge property.

Both former presidents Cory Aquino and her son, Pnoy, had been criticized for not giving Luisita attention, and both were accused of protecting their personal interests.

“Now that we are under President Duterte, we hope that this case will be resolved. We hope that the farmers will get what belongs to them”, Garcia said.

Garcia added that around 1,300 hectares of Hacienda Lusita could be distributed to at least 680 farmers if done fairly and legally. /Mark Corpuz/
