A boat has capsized in Antique, leaving one person dead and at least six survivors including Pandan, Antique Mayor Jonathan Tan and two local actresses. The incident reportedly happened on Holy Thursday, March 29, while the group decided to go to Mararison Island, one of the famous island destinations in Culasi, Antique.
As reported by ABS-CBN News, Pandan public relations officer Jesus Aguirre Dioso said that the lone fatality was identified as Bennie Dable, 50, Mayor Tan’s driver and bodyguard and the person driving the speedboat when the incident happened. The victim was reportedly brought to the hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Dioso confirmed that the survivors of the capsized boat are actresses Bianca Manalo; 30 and Ehra Madrigal, 32; Tom Yeung (Madrigal’s husband); Majel Tresche, 65; Torebeo Barrentos, 41; an unidentified female; and 2 minors. He added that he was supposed to join the group in the boat to Culasi but decided to take a land trip instead.
“The boat capsized at 10:50 a.m., they arrived in the shoreline at 1:45 p.m. Mayor Tan and Torebeo Barrentos swam for more than 2 hours going to the shoreline. Fishermen saw them and helped them. Mayor Tan went onboard a pumpboat and went back to where the boat capsized and checked on the situation of his friends,” Dioso said.
In a related report by Bombo Radyo Iloilo also on Thursday, Sr. Inspector Glen Jaromay, officer in charge (OIC) of the Sebaste police, said that the speedboat was hit by strong waves that caused it to turn upside down. He added that that Dable hit his head on the speed boat when it was struck by strong waves that caused his death.
